What is celebrated on San Juan Night in Catalonia?
San Juan Night in Catalonia – the revetlla de Sant Joan, or St John's Eve – welcomes the summer on the eve of 24 June, with street parties, fire and celebrations that go on late in streets, squares and on beaches. In Calafell it's marked with the town's party and a night by the sea.
- Fire: bonfires and the Canigó Flame (Flama del Canigó), which travels across Catalonia to light many of them.
- Noise: firecrackers and, in many towns, fireworks.
- Food and drink: the coca de Sant Joan, with candied fruit and pine nuts, and cava for the toast.
